Rising in north-central Quebec, east of Lac Mistassini, the Nestaocano flows south through boreal forests to the Du Chef/Ashuapmushuan and then down into Lac St Jean and the Saguenay Valley. Starting small in size in a land of black spruce and eskers the river flows swiftly south through numerous rapids quickly gaining volume as it descends. We’ll spend 8 days paddling from near the headwaters down to past the confluence with the Du Chef River. We’ll pass through a few lakes in the upper stretches of river, some with lovely campsites, after which it’s mile after mile of swift water with numerous enjoyable rapids along the way. There are well over 60 rapids along the way, 90% of which are normally runnable class I, 2, and some class 3. With only a half dozen portages, and a about the same number that might require lining, the river is great fun to paddle! We’ll meet in St Felicien, Qc and shuttle to the river.
