Newfoundland Exploitts Island Sea Kayaking Adventure: World Renowned and a Treat not to be missed! Experience the incredible scenic beauty of Newfoundland's north coast. Perfect for novice to intermediate outdoor enthusiasts. On this trip we will be based out of a small outport cottage on one of the Exploits Islands. People will still tent out but we can use a small cabin for cooking and to get out of the elements in case of bad weather. At the end of each day of paddling among the islands or hiking one of the island trails, it's great to relax in the rustic comfort of a cabin or deck and look out on the spectacular view over the sea!
The Bay of Exploits located on Newfoundland's northeast cost is a sea kayaking paradise. Gazing along the maritime shoreline and adjacent waterways you never know what you will see; a whale, a flock of sea birds, an iceberg or an abandoned village. This is the unknown 'Broken Islands group' of the east coast! This Bay, at the mouth of Newfoundland's largest river, covers an area of over 1000 square kilometers and contains dozens and dozens of islands that offer great scenic beauty and wonderful protected paddling. Most islands are within a few kilometers of each other providing natural shelter. This maze of islands and headlands was once home to the native Beothuk Indians. After contact early European settlers and fishermen settled in the area because of its sheltered bays and rich resources, soon small fishing communities thrived in the area.
As we paddle and explore you will see ever-present evidence of this rich history of outport communities nestled in the myriad of islands and bays. Once the area housed over 600 people, but from the middle of the 20th C to the present this has dwindled to virtually nothing as communities have been gradually abandoned, both voluntarily and forcibly. We'll paddle, hike and explore around these communities. One day/evening we'll hike the exploits Island to the Surgoen's Cove lighthouse with its spectacular views North (to Labrador) from atop its high cliff site. We will most likely spend the night in this historic restored local.
