Come and join us on an incredible tropical hiking and paddling adventure! (visit the Wanapitei CANOE facebook page for more photos of this trip) Corcovado National Park on Costa Rica's remote Osa Peninsula has been described by National Geographic as the most biodiverse area on the planet. It is home to over 750 species of trees, 117 species of reptiles and amphibians, 365 species of birds and 120 species of mammals!
The Osa Peninsula is on the Pacific Ocean in southwestern Costa Rica close to the Panamanian border. At the southern border of the peninsula forested mountains drop to the sea in the Golfo Dulce. This enormous bay is one of only 3 tropical fjords in the world. These waters plunge to depths exceeding 200 m and are home to many species of dolphins and whales. The Osa Peninsula is a land of dense jungle, mountains, mangroves and seemingly endless tropical beaches. Historic inaccessibility meant this area received less development pressure than other areas. This, combined with Costa Rica's decision to set aside much of the huge peninsula for Corcovado National Park has meant the preservation of one of the world's wildest and pristine rainforest.

Hiking through Corcovado National Park we can expect to see Baird's tapirs; sloths; spider, howler and white-faced Capuchin monkeys; white-lipped and collared peccaries; coatimundis; tamandua anteaters and if we are lucky we may spot one of the elusive wild cats indigenous to the Osa: jaguar, margay, jaguarundi, ocelot and puma. The forest is alive with giant Blue Morpho butterflies and countless tropical birds...scarlet macaws, toucans, parrots, parakeets, manakins, tanagers, trogons, woodpeckers, a variety of raptors and many species of hummingbirds just to name a few.
On the kayak trip we will put into the sheltered waters at the inner northern end of the Golfo Dulce. We'll spend 5 relaxing days making our way along the rugged rainforest shore along the s.e. side of the gulf. Camping will be on small rainforest beaches.
